Wicked | Wizard of Oz Musical

Wicked the Musical

A Deliciously Wicked Tale

Growing up, most of us have read, the “Wizard of Oz”. We have all been entranced by Dorothy and her adventures, and I bet some of you wore out the book! Although many of us wanted to be friend and confidant to Dorothy, a few weren’t as sympathetic, especially after the 1939 movie was released. The film was a success, but the Munchkins were said to be OTT ghastly, while the Good Witch could give diabetes with her sweetness.

Setting the backdrop
These elements slightly tarnished the reputation of the book, Wicked, by Gregory Maguire, but not enough to wreak severe damage. But the stage prequel, which sheds light on the back-story of the good witch Glinda, and of her malicious green-faced rival, Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, had generated considerable interest from the time of curtain call. Even though the reviews are not overly optimistic, it has become a huge hit in the Big Apple.

What is the story?
The audience of Wicked generally comprises adolescent girls listening fully captivated to the tale of two typical young women meeting at Shiza University and move on to Oz, where life is taking a dark turn. Glinda is the “it girl”, who is pretty, spoilt, wants to get her own way and popular even though she is an airhead. Elphaba’s green skin has always made her an object of ridicule and mockery from everyone apart from her crippled sister. It doesn’t take long for rivalry to embed its roots deeply into the pair, before they find out about being bosom buddies. Glinda tries to be “good” and finds love with Adam Garcia’s prince, while Elphaba turns into a broom-flying freedom crusader on behalf of Oz’s dispossessed. Soon the roles are reversed!

Why watch it?
Winnie Holzman’s script is the power behind this spectacle; preventing it from being preachy and imparting some humor the gags. The design by Eugene Lee and lighting by Kenneth Posner are definitely praiseworthy. The songs from Stephen Schwartz have a subtle wit, but his specialty is clear when the female leads stand in the center and move into the stratosphere with the big gloopy power ballads. Idina Menzel, a Tony award winner, gives a magical performance as the deformed Elphaba by blending in seamless with the character. Helen Dallimore also does justice to her role as the bubbly and self-obsessed Glinda. The friendship between these characters has been treated delicately that worked in their favor.

Overall, it is a good effort, and you must definitely attend a show. Now on tour. Wicked the Musical tickets.

STOMP | Orpheum Theatre (New York)

Stomp

STOMP out a Tune!

The best part of STOMP is that it can be watched by all – kids, teens, adults, elderly people – there is some element that appeals to each age group. It doesn’t have words and the musical is ironically not structured on melody, but chooses to focus on rhythm instead. Irrespective of your taste in music, STOMP at the Orpheum Theatre, New York, shouldn’t be missed out!

How did STOMP originate?
The spectacle consists of an extraordinary amalgamation of percussion, movement and visual comedy, which dates back to Brighton, U.K. more than two decades ago in 1991. It was the brainchild of Steve McNicholas and Luke Creswell, who had begun to collaborate from 1981 as members of the street band Pookiesnackenburger and the theatre group, Cliff Hanger. When the band produced the famous “Bins” commercial for Heineken lager, which was a part of the band’s stage performance, it paved the way for STOMP’s dustbin dance in the climax.

Potpourri with personalities
STOMP features a group of individuals, each bringing something to the group with their unique, yet strong personality traits. They work as a team by utilizing simple building blocks to create a complex entity, which can be associated with everyone, and is identifiable by others at the same time. The crowd has their own quirks, eccentricities, competitiveness and differences like normal human beings, which in turn define the peculiar, yet intriguing dynamic between them.

What makes STOMP a must-watch?
It is an extremely enjoyable show, full of underlying wit and humor, which is why it has garnered glowing reviews and tremendous praise. The ensemble cast with 8 members use unusual objects they have found, to create captivating music and tongue-in-cheek humor. The items are diverse such as Zippo lighters, push brooms, wooden poles, hammer handles, garbage cans, inner tubes, matchboxes, kitchen sink, and so on. The blend of household and commercial objects to breathe character into music is an exceedingly brave attempt at a fresh idea that took off perfectly.

It is tough to pinpoint a single factor and say it its awesome or brilliant! In fact, the whole concept is a glaring example of genius – in some ways, STOMP was ahead of its time, even though it was and continues to be well-accepted and liked. The wordless factor also adds to its appeal, while the full houses are proof enough that STOMP has many years left to wow audiences and solidy their mark in the world of theatre.

Terry Fator | The Terry Fator Theatre @Mirage Hotel Casino (Las Vegas)

Talent Comes in Many Forms…

“America’s Got Talent” has never been the same since Terry Fator won the competition in 2007 with his feat involving puppets. His win opened up new doors and opportunities for budding performers and gave a fresh lease to the industry of puppetry, which was slowly sinking into oblivion. Many have labeled his performance to be a “marriage made in Sesame Street heaven” as he has succeeded in putting the “fun” back in puppetry!

How does he do it?
Who would have thought about a popular puppet show in Vegas? Terry Fator did, and needless to say, he has done it brilliantly. He performs at The Mirage Hotel and Casino here, and has created a world-class act, which is extremely popular – people travel from far and wide to watch his shows. Although his claim to fame was by drawing inspiration from Sesame Street, his show isn’t an ordinary “puppet show”. He infuses a healthy mix of comedy in it, and combined with his impeccable comic timing and excellent impressionist skills, he gets everyone hooked to his 90-minute performance!

What does the show entail?
Due to the intensity of his shows, there is no warm-up routine involved.  The show takes off with Fator and Winston, the Impersonating Turtle, who demonstrates his musical prowess while sharing his fondness for the exclusive Turtle Ranch, which is a running gag during the show. Next is the cowboy-themed puppet – Walter T. Airedale, who cracks jokes and even takes a dig at Fator asking him why he can’t talk when the latter is laughing! Other puppets during the act includes Maynard Thompkins, Wrex the Crash Test Dummy and Vickie the Cougar.

The truly incredible aspect is that Fator is never seen opening his mouth more than half an inch during songs unless he is breathing or singing a something himself. That is why, he is often deemed as the most talented singer on the Strip due to his unique ability of communicating through puppets and comedic situations that have the audience in stitches throughout the performance! The booking is usually choc-a-block, which is why you should get tickets well in advance.  See Dates & Get Tickets Here: Terry Fator
