Chataeu Ste Michelle | Woodinville WA

A concert in a winery – now that sounds like an intriguing event, one that is certainly worth purchasing tickets for well in advance! The Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville, Washington is hosting a special evening on the 5th of September 2015, with Pink Martini, a musical group that was formed a couple of decades back by pianist Thomas Lauderdale in Portland, Oregon. It dabbles in music spanning multiple genres such as classical, Latin, jazz and classic pop.

The History of Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery
A common belief about wines was that the best ones were available only in California or Italy, but ever since Chateau Ste. Michelle was built more than 100 years ago, they have continued to push past this stereotypical mindset and their award winning wines are the biggest testament of the fact Washington can hold its own and how! It blends Old World winemaking customs with New World techniques to create some of the finest red and white wines in the world. There are separate breweries for the red and white – they are made in Chateau Ste. Michelle and Canoe Ridge Estate winery (East Washington) respectively.

Pink Martini – A Heady Cocktail
When you combine music with wine, the result is bound to be exhilarating and one that is not to be forgotten. You get a great opportunity to learn more about the history and rich cultural heritage surrounding wine making while listening to some wonderful music. Pink Martini features a 13-member little orchestra as they like to be referred, with lead vocalists China Forbes and Storm Large. Their multi-lingual prowess is more than praiseworthy and they have performed on concert stages and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Northern Africa, Australia and New Zealand and North America. They have had a great run since 2003 with several concerts being sold out, and impressive events such as shows at Carnegie Hall, opening party of the remodeled Museum of Modern Art in NYC, Governor’s Ball at the 80th Annual Academy Awards, and Sydney Festival in Australia (2008).

The Pink Martini event will no doubt be amazing and the seating arrangement is perfectly put together, so you have a clear view from every spot. You get to enjoy beautiful music while sipping on some of the finest wines. Please keep in mind you can’t bring wine from the outside, although they sometimes make an exception for their own bottles. There are several options when it comes to food and basic amenities like clean bathrooms, cooling stations, and so on. Book your tickets without further delay to avoid disappointment – hurry!

Delve into the Intoxication of Sin City | Jubilee! (Las Vegas)

Whenever we hear the words “Las Vegas”, images of casinos, gambling, strip shows, lap dances, card games, stand up comedies, and so on, flash through the mind. Thousands of tourists come here from all corners of the world to catch a glimpse of the pleasures this town has to offer, and showgirls play an integral role in it.

Showgirls rule the roost
A common misconception is that showgirls are just what their name indicates – they are just for “show” without any real talent to provide quality entertainment. However, that is completely untrue. Showgirls are extremely skilled in various feats, which comprise a major part of attractions in this town. In fact, Bally’s Las Vegas is one of the few places where you can watch real showgirls giving performances.

Extremely popular
After more than 3 decades in the business, Jubilee! has achieved cult status, by outlasting other showgirl productions and other shows in Vegas – no wonder it is hailed as a legend. Jubilee! embodies the glamour and true spirit of this town – a complete Vegas revue with topless performers donning feathers and rhinestones, just like you see in the movies.

The performances
Jubilee! has maintained a historical touch, while making detailed changes to ensure the overall shows are even better. For instance, the revamped version retains the candor and freshness of the original program, while incorporating elements of a contemporary culture. Almost 100 performers, including boys and girls, dance, jive, and sing through 95 minutes of non-stop tracks like the sinking of the Titanic, and Samson and Delilah. The sparkling and vibrant costumes are spectacular, while the feathered headdresses and scintillating entries through the grand staircase captivates you throughout the show.

Smooth operation
The unique factor about Jubilee! is it functions like clockwork – the same way it has been over the last 30 years. The wardrobe team has to sew, repair, and clean costumes by hand, while stagehands and other crew help to disassemble and reassemble sets and props for the show on a regular basis. Did you know the stage is enormous – almost half the size of a football field, and is touted to be 3rd on a list of most technologically advanced stages in the world.

Almost 10 performances are staged every week, so attending Jubilee! is a must. You should also check out the backstage tour and Vintage Vegas that is the original revue of showgirls. A ticket for Jubilee! at Bally’s also includes a free dinner buffet at Paris Las Vegas – enjoy!

Chris Brown | One Hell of a Nite Tour

A Helluva Tour for Sure!

Music doesn’t follow rules or equations – it creates its own path and niche. It allows you to break open the shackles that restrict your freedom and take you to a happy place – as an artist, you shouldn’t be afraid to step out of the comfort zone, a statement, which Chris Brown greatly believed in. He is a triple threat – artist, dance, and actor, which comes as no surprise since he started dabbling in singing and dancing from a very young age.

Rise to stardom
Brown was born in Tappahannock, Virginia and due to his fascination with music; he was closely involved with the church choir and participated in numerous locally held talent shows. His debut album, in association with Jive Records gained the number two position on the US Billboard 200 and received a double platinum certification with record breaking sales. He followed it up with Exclusive that achieved similar sales figures.

…and the dominos fall
It all went downhill in 2009 when Brown was subjected to harsh media glares due to the felony assault of his girlfriend at the time, well-known singer Rihanna. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 5 years of probation as well as 6 months of community service. Needless to say, it was a very rough patch in Brown’s life but his fans gave him strength to pull through, so he could put all transgressions in the past and move on.

Lazarus can rise yet again
His dedicated fans welcomed their hero with open arms when he began to release music online, including the mix tapes with his # 1 singles “Deuces” and “No BS.” Encouraged with the brilliant response, he titled his new album as F.A.M.E, an acronym for Fans Are My Everything. He repeatedly thanked his fans for their love and support, and how they are an important part of his rebound and albeit slow, but steady progress up the ladder of success yet again. The hot favorite of F.A.M.E. was “Beautiful People”.

Concert tour details
The summer amphitheatre tour, also known as “One Hell of a Nite Tour” produced by Live Nation and Haymon Events, will take Brown from Kansas City, which is the first stop, on 12th August, through Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Miami and San Diego, with the final performance in Concord on 19th September. It also features performances by Kid Ink, Omarion, Fetty Wap and Teyana Taylor. The tour is interestingly timed during a major event in Brown’s life – his attempts to reconcile with Karrueche Tran, with whom he has a daughter named Royalty. He is doing his best to smooth over stuff with Tran and be a part of his kid’s life at the same time.

Get your tickets booked for Chris Brown’s “One Hell of a Nite Tour” right away to avoid last-minute disappointments.

Miguel Live in Concert | Wildhearts Tour 2015

Experience the Power of Wildheart

The wait is finally over for Miguel fans! After the success of Kaleidoscope Dream in 2012, he had announced a follow-up, which is due about 3 years later, on 30th June, just days away. The new album is called Wildheart, and needless to say, has generated enormous hype and fans are literally counting the hours with bated breath.

Earlier portfolio
Right before Wildheart, Miguel scored several one-off singles and collaborations, which features duets with Jessie Ware and Janelle Monáe, Adult Swim song “Can’t Sleep Together”, and of course, his musical inputs to the soundtracks of the Girls and Hunger Games. The reason why there is an increasing buzz around Wildheart’s release is that he hasn’t been too forthcoming with details about the album. Although, he has admitted to working in the studio with Pharrell and producer DJ Premier, who is well-known for his association with D’Angelo, Jay Z, and Nas.

His summer tour
To popularize his album, he shared “Coffee (F*cking)” that went viral instantly. It was basically a revamped form of the “Coffee Track” that originated about a year back, and was among the his surprise three-song EP in December as well. It features guest bars from Wale and highlights a double shot of sexual desire – a fantastic marketing idea that truly hit home! He is all set to hit the road for an official summer tour, where he exclusively promotes Wildheart. It starts in late July and spans across Houston, Atlanta, New York City, Toronto, Chicago, and many more. The final performance will be in Los Angeles at the onset of September. Pre-orders for the album have shot up like crazy on iTunes, and it looks like the Adorn star has yet another winner on his hands.

Bring out the wildness
Wildheart is supposed to be a love letter dedicated to his hometown of Los Angeles with strong influences of hip-hop tunes and rock music to portray how California soul sounds in 2015. Apparently, the music from the album is being streamed in certain regions already, before its release via NPR Music’s First Listen. The whole idea is to let fans enjoy the music and feel it, which is why the Grammy winner is staging a special First Listen Live performance at (Le) Poisson Rouge in New York City on June 30, before he heads out for his summer tour. Other First Listen Live performers include Arcade Fire, ScHoolboy Q, Iggy and The Stooges and Alabama Shakes.

Special guest Dorothy, who performs in an LA-based band of the same name with guitarist Mark Jackson, bassist Gregg Cash and drummer Zac Morris, is joining Miguel on the tour. They mostly play traditional rock with a blues vibe, so it will be interesting to see what the powerful combination of Miguel and Dorothy will create.

Thoroughly Modern Millie | The Taylor Performing Arts Center (Monrovia)

Journey Back to the 1920s!

The concept of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” took root as an Academy Award-winning movie in 1967, which was penned by Richard Morris with Julie Andrews & Mary Tyler Moore as ingénues. It was later revised for the stage, more than ten years back, by Mr. Morris and Dick Scanlan, and there were some additions to the score by Jeanine Tesori. It has been extremely popular on Broadway ever since it made its debut in 2002 with Sutton Foster in the title role, who received numerous accolades including six Tony awards.

The backdrops…
The Taylor Performing Arts Center in Monrovia is all set to host the Paper Mill Playhouse’s new production – “Thoroughly Modern Millie” in July, which has garnered enormous praise on its previous tours. The set design by Michael Schweikardt has been specifically mentioned as resembling art deco style paintings, which heightens the beauty and charisma of the Big Apple. Pastel colors have been used in impressionistic shapes to depict the Manhattan skyline. Since the story is based in the 1920s, the costumes have been fashioned accordingly.

A gist of what you can expect!
The lead role of Millie Dillmount is perfectly essayed by Laurie Veldheer, who brings a refreshing honesty to the character. The story picks up from the time when Millie arrives in New York from Salina, Kansas, in search for new adventures and experiences. She checks into the Priscilla Hotel for Women in Manhattan and lands a job at the Secure Trust Insurance. Her boss is the handsome, attractive Trevor Graydon, played by Burke Moses, who values her skills, but doesn’t really consider her to be dating material. There is a hint of a love triangle with Jimmy Smith, portrayed by Jeff Kready, who doesn’t takes jobs seriously and moves on when he is bored. It is not just romance though – the story has its share of drama and crime, with the suspicious hotel owner Mrs. Meers and occupants disappearing without explanations. Millie’s best friend, the orphaned Miss Dorothy Brown might fall prey to Mrs. Meer’s technique of inviting hotel guests who have no family, into her back room for tea – watch to find out the rest.

“Thoroughly Modern Millie” shines due to its music, especially the foot tapping title track. Dennis Jones has done an amazing job with the dance moves and the direction by Mark S. Hoebee is just fantastic. Overall, the ensemble performs well – both leads and supporting characters, which is why you should book the tickets right away.

On the Town | Foxwoods Theatre (New York)

Let’s Go Out on the Town!

Several decades back, it was a bleak and dismal time for everyone due to the World War II. The dark cloud, which had settled over people, seemed to be at a standstill, as it continued to bring forth a plethora of grief, loss, and despair. It was during this time, when the original version of the musical called “On the Town” opened on Broadway.

Young and fresh…
“On the Town”, hosted by the Foxwoods Theatre in New York, has received praise for the music and lyrics. The scene when the three sailors – Gabey (Tony Yazbeck), Chip (Jay Armstrong Johnson) and Ozzie (Clyde Alves) – come down the gangplank of their ship, while singing “New York, New York”, is when the tones are particularly exuberant, which add flair to the dance moves. The story is about these sailors who want to make the most of their 24-hour shore leave by sightseeing to their hearts’ content in New York, and also having fun by spending time with girls. Their journey takes them to Brooklyn Navy Yard, Coney Island, Times Square, Carnegie Hall, and so on.

Ready for a soiree?
The romantic fantasy of these young men is particularly touching and poignant. The musical is not just about drama, as it involves comic elements as well. At the subway, Gabey is awe-struck by the beauty of this month’s Miss Turnstiles, Ivy Smith, played by Megan Fairchild. They split up and embark on a search for her, while visiting some of the most iconic landmarks in the Big Apple. At the Museum of Natural History, Ozzie catches the attention of the sex-crazed anthropologist Claire De Loone, played by Elizabeth Stanley and Chip finds a companion in a lady cab driver Hildy, played by Alysha Umphress.

Not always a happy ending…
The two couples go club hopping to experience the city’s nightlife. In a sad twist, Ivy is shown to be working as a cooch dancer in Coney Island to pay Maude P. Dilly, her mean and cruel singing teacher, played by Jackie Hoffman. Unfortunately, Gabey’s quest doesn’t end well, which is beautifully portrayed in the song called “Lonely Town” – his sole salvation is when he finds Ivy in his arms, and they dance together in a fantasy sequence. The musical paints a vivid picture in tje mind about romance being similar to a coin with one side containing happiness and other exuding sadness.

Although the performances are amazing,
the music is the real scene-stealer – don’t miss out;

The Mentalist | Frederic Da Silva (Jubilee Theater – Las Vegas)

Ready for some Mind-Reading?

The concept of a mentalist has been around for ages, but this unique talent was often dismissed as a carnival act and sometimes the performer was deemed a fraud as well. No one believed in the fable of a person who could correctly guess your Christian name, or describe the contents in your wallet without moving from his position or touching you in any way.

A test of self-confidence and talent…
Even though several phonies and con artists pretend to be mentalists in order to extort money, the real ones do exist. The craft is a science that involves sharp observation skills and iron-clad focus. It is tough to master the techniques, which is why it may take years before you can use what you have learned. The simple reason is when you are about to perform in front of hundreds of people, there is no room for error, nor can you appear nervous & start stuttering.  If you are unable to project confidence, the audience will sense your fear and apprehension, so it won’t be long before you are booed off the stage!

The expert at work…
Take a look at Frederic Da Silva’s shows. He is a well-known, distinguished mentalist, who performs in his own act known as “Paranormal”. His fame has spread globally, which is why throngs of people watch him perform on a daily basis. With his uber-cool demeanor, he can shush hardcore skeptics by telling them what lies in their pockets or predict the name of the person they are thinking about. Rest assured there is no machinery or equipment used here, as Da Silva always operates through the powers of his mind. It is a fascinating blend of mystery, hypnosis and mind-reading that leaves you astounded and bewildered, as you try to figure out how he did it.

Audience participation…
Da Silva likes to interact with his audience and play games where he asks them to think of a number and he writes it down correctly for everyone to see. There is no guesswork at all – the predictions are 100% accurate. Another unique feat is when he asks two people to come up on stage; he touches one, but the other person is able to feel the sensation of his finger too, even if Da Silva isn’t directly touching them.

Don’t miss out on his incredible act at live the Jubilee Theater in Las Vegas

Walnut Street Theatre Presents: Memphis

“Memphis” – A Truly Thought Provoking Chronicle

Who would have thought that a white DJ playing “race music” would take the world by storm one day? Back in the 1950s the term “race music” was used for songs by African Americans who belted out rock-and-roll and blues. Memphis DJ Dewey Phillips took a revolutionary step towards demolishing the color barrier in the world of radio by becoming one of the first white DJs to play such tunes.

Enter “Memphis”…
Inspired by the same theme, Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia is putting on a production called Memphis, set to run through July 12. The staging in one word can be described as being “musically sensational”. Joe DiPietro has penned the script, while Christopher Sutton plays protagonist Huey Calhoun. The plot starts off about how he ends up breaking the same color barrier like Philips.

Similar, yet different…
This is where the story carves its own niche. It doesn’t portray the hardcore partying lifestyle of Philips, nor does it show his death due to methamphetamine abuse. On the contrary, there is a romantic angle involved in this musical – Huey falls head over heels in love with a black singer, Felicia Farell, played by Kimber Sprawl. He begins a crusade of sorts spurred on by his romanticism and search for music of the inner soul. Eventually Huey and Felicia clash as she wants to make her as an artist, while he wants to focus on social progress.

Certainly praiseworthy…
Director Richard Stafford has done a great job in depicting a documentary type soiree, which is a blend of both fact and fiction. Black and white images of Huey being arrested are flashed before the audience, while other montages show him in the lead at a protest and both white and black dancers performing at one of his concerts – these intensify feelings towards Huey and his journey. Special mention must be made about Barbieri’s set pieces and Gail Baldoni’s fantastic costumes aptly depicting the 1950s era. The divergence from the original story has earned its fair share of criticisms, with some calling it a tad misleading since the musical claims to be based on real events, but the dazzling performances more than make up for this tiny flaw. Mary Martello as Huey’s mother is amazing, as is Kimber with her scintillating voice. Huey is also great although he is clearly more in element at the beginning – innocent and passionate about what he believes.
