The Beths

The Beths are a New Zealand indie pop band formed in 2015, originally from Auckland and known for its use of vocal harmony from every band member. The band currently consists of Elizabeth Stokes (vocalist/guitarist), Jonathan Pearce (guitarist/vocalist), and Benjamin Sinclair (bassist/vocalist). The three all met at the University of Auckland while attending Jazz classes. The Beths released their first single via Soundcloud in July of 2005. They released their first independent debut EP, “Warm Blood” the following year.

The band released the single, “Great No One”, in October 2017 which was the first to be lifted from their debut album, “Future Me Hates Me” and to receive rave reviews. The album was released globally on August 10 and the title track was nominated as one of five finalists for the 2018 Silver Scroll award in New Zealand.

The songwriter, lead singer, and guitarist, Elizabeth Stokes stated that she writes her dark lyrics “most when I’m upset”. Deciphering the difference between playful self-deprecation and genuine misery is part of what makes their songs human.
