The SpongeBob Square Pants musical is one of the best on Broadway series with humor, heart, and theatricality. It is based on the Nickelodeon animated television series directed and co-conceived by Tina Landau. In this stage musical the director imagined a world inspired by cartoons and translated the 2D world into a 3D experience. The musical includes songs by various artists and a book by Kyle Jarrow which made its world premiere on June 2016 at the Oriental Theatre in Chicago.

It opened up on Broadway in December 2017 at The Palace Theatre and ran through September 16, 2018, with 29 previews and 327 regular performances. The production was cut short due to the renovation of the Palace Theatre. The orchestrations by Tom Kitt utilized an orchestra of 18 for the Broadway production and tied for the most-nominated production at the 2018 Tony awards with Mean Girls for 12 nominations.
